Bill Berry is a folk musician, who was called to but did not give evidence at the Bogle-Chandler inquest. The evidence Berry had been called to give, which the coroner ruled would not have been of any help to the inquiry, was that Berry had conducted an extra-marital affair with Margaret Chandler.
According to Berry's wife, Clare, Geoffrey Chandler had felt guilty about conducting affairs outside of his marriage and so had encouraged his wife to do the same. The Berrys were old friends of the Chandlers.
The relationship between the Chandlers and the Berrys also led to the "shellfish toxin" theory that made headlines shortly after the inquest closed. A Brisbane scientist, Dr Robert Endean, reported that a vial of toxin was missing. It was also discovered that Geoffrey Chandler had flown to Brisbane in December 1962 -- and that one of Endean's research assistants was Bill Berry's wife.
However it was soon realised that murder using the shellfist venom would have been impractical, and the theory was discounted.
