Role:   Member of Morphett family

Status:   Unknown

Notes:

On 10 January 1997, the Sydney Morning Herald published a letter from Tony Morphett which contained perhaps as fitting a summary of the Bogle-Chandler case as any other. It read:

It is 34 years and a few days since my sister Margaret Chandler died in agony on the banks of the Lane Cove River. She was deeply loved by her family and, it appears, by everyone she met. Now Peter Corris has suggested (Summer Agenda, January 6) that the place of her death should be included in a tour of Sydney's great crime scenes.

My sister was not a work of fiction to be toyed with, but a living person. So was Dr Bogle and so was Sallie-Anne Huckstepp and so were all the others on Peter Corris's proposed tour itinerary. They were all human beings whose deaths are still mourned by those who loved them.

Until Peter Corris can learn empathy, can understand and respect the simple fact of our shared humanity, he will never be the writer that he could be.

Tony Morphett,

January 7 Leura.
